The Seagull

A Sky-High Production

First produced in 1896, The Seagull remains one of Anton Chekhov’s most influential works. Now, this tale of art, love and disillusion takes to the stage at the Barbican for a strict six-week showing, as Cate Blanchett makes her return to London theatre in the role of Arkadina.

From humble beginnings

Opening night in St. Petersburg was famously considered a flop. However, within two years the play was received by rapturous audiences in Moscow as a seminal moment in Russian theatre. Multiple adaptions across stage and screen have followed, to similar critical acclaim.

This major new production by Duncan Macmillan and Thomas Ostermeier sees Oscar and BAFTA winner Blanchett joined by a glittering cast, including Tom Burke in the role of Trigorin. Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin and BAFTA winner Jason Watkins also star.

A tale for all time

The story follows Arkadina as she returns to her country home, only to find herself caught in a world of dreams and desires. Her son seeks to step out of her shadow, while her lover (Trigorin) catches the eye of a younger actress – setting the scene for a timeless tale of passion, power and human fragility.

I am thrilled that… London will experience this once-in-a-generation actress in one of the greatest theatrical roles of Arkadina.
